Calling all artisans!
The Eighth Annual Ocrafolk Music and Storytelling Festival
June 6-8, 2008

Hello friends and artisans! Thanks for your interest in being an artisan in this year’s Ocrafolk Festival! If you have participated in the past as an Ocrafolk artisan, please read the application carefully. We would like to invite everyone to participate, but unfortunately we have limited spaces. Selections for the artisans will reflect the festival committee’s desire to exhibit quality and variety, in addition to other factors. Here are the application deadlines.

2008 Ocrafolk Artisan Application

-- Juried selection of 2008 Ocrafolk Artisans will be made by the Ocracoke Arts Council. Due to the increased number of applications, returning artisans from previous years can no longer be granted automatic acceptance to the festival.

-- A limited number of artisans may be permitted to set up also on Sunday, June 8. If you are interested in being considered for a Sunday booth please indicate so in the application. This year, due to Ocracoke School graduation coinciding with the festival, there will be no indoor rain contingencies for Sunday Artisans. In case of rain on Sunday, events will most likely be moved to the Ocracoke Community Center, but the space will not allow for indoor setup of artisans.

--. The Ocrafolk Festival Fundraising Live Auction is on Friday night at the community center, after the pot luck. Part of the artisan application fee is a donation of your artwork to the festival auction. Item should be valued at $50 and is due at the festival offices by May 8th. We recommended sending items by UPS Ground (this provides tracking and automatic insurance for up to $100). The Friday night potluck is well attended by the Ocracoke community and visitors and presents a wonderful opportunity for you to showcase your work to potential buyers. Please select an item that will entice Ocrafolk fans to visit your booth on the weekend!
APRIL 10 -- All applications for the general pool should be received by the festival committee by this date. The board will begin a juried selection and will contact the artisans as they are selected. Although we hope to have completed contacting artisans by April 16, the selection process will continue until all spaces are filled. Please feel free to contact us later than this date to find out about availability.

APRIL 16 – Artisan Acceptance completed and contacted.

MAY 8 – Artisan auction donation due at Ocrafolk Offices.
Details about your work/organization in the festival program and on the festival web site: All artisans will receive space for a small bio and a photograph of their work on this web site as well as a link to their web pages should they have one. Bios may be up to 75 words (including title, contact phone, e-mail, web site, etc.). ALONG WITH YOUR APPLICATION, YOU MUST PROVIDE ARTISAN BIOGRAPHY TO THE FESTIVAL. This is an artisan biography and not a general accounting of your entire life. As much as we love you, we cannot take the time to write your biography. The biography should tell about your art, and how you became involved in it. We do reserve the right to edit your biography.

IF YOU WISH TO HAVE A SMALL PHOTO OF YOUR WORK ON THE FESTIVAL WEBSITE, YOU MUST E-MAIL A COMPUTER PHOTO TO THE FESTIVAL UPON YOUR ACCEPTANCE. We cannot be responsible for scanning photos. Many copy stores and libraries can provide this scanning and e-mail service for you. Computer photos should be around 3”x 3” in JPG format at 72 dpi. Focusing on a single craft item or a small ensemble work best. If your work is already posted on a web site, we can get the picture off of the web . . . please be specific about the site and photo. For the Ocrafolk Festival 2008 Artisans:
Please read this letter carefully and mail/e-mail in your complete registration form.


1. Quality: All entries must be ORIGINAL HANDCRAFTED ITEMS by the artist applying and attending the festival.


2. Space Size & Fee: A single space is approximately 10x10 (a 15x15 tent is okay, but please let us know).’ If you need additional display area, you must purchase an additional space. The fee for all artisans in 2008 is $35 PLUS AN ART/CRAFT ITEM of yours that retails for at least $50. Checks and money orders can be made out to “Ocrafolk Festival.” Please wait to send the fee until you receive an acceptance notification from the festival. No-shows forfeit their application fee. Please let us know if you are suddenly unable to attend so we can make adjustments to our layout.

You must furnish your own tables and chairs. No electricity can be provided; generators are not permitted. Please notify us if you will be bringing a tent as some locations are under low trees. The festival grounds are pedestrian only. Your vehicle must be relocated to the vendor parking after unloading (about 100 yards away). We do not carry insurance on your belongings for this event.

It is highly recommended that you observe the weather forecast and come prepared for rain if necessary – bring tarps, tents, etc. On Saturday, there is a rain location for the festival at the Ocracoke School, but the optimal location for the Ocrafolk Festival is outdoors. Although serious rain will warrant moving inside, occasional showers may not. For artisans selected for Sunday there are no rain contingencies this year.

Your artwork contribution to the Ocrafolk Festival Fundraising Auction provides support that keeps the festival a free event to visitors (helping loosen their wallets for artists on the weekend!). In case you missed the change above, the auction has been moved from Sunday to the Friday night community potluck in order to showcase the artisans before the weekend begins. Please make sure our office has received your auction item by May 8th.

3. Time: On the Saturday of the festival, please have your display set up and your vehicle moved to the designated parking areas for artisans by 9:00 AM (we will let you know where these parking areas are later). Space identification numbers will be in place by 7:15 AM. Directions to your space can be found at the Central Info Tent.

4. Taxes:
You are obligated to collect NC sales tax on all sales, and will be responsible individually for collecting and paying the sales tax to the state.

5. Cleanup: Help us keep the residents of Ocracoke Village happy with our presence by cleaning your area before you leave. Thanks!

6. Inclimate Weather: In case of bad weather on Saturday, the entire festival will be moved to the Ocracoke School. Times for events will remain as close to the original schedule as possible. For artisans selected for Sunday there are no rain contingencies this year.
